National Parks: Petrified Forest National Park -- Arizona -- Petrified Forest National Park is a surprising land of scenic wonders and fascinating science. The park is located in northeastern Arizona and features one of the world's largest and most colorful concentrations of petrified wood. Also included within Petrified Forest National Park are the multi-hued badlands of the Chinle Formation known as the Painted Desert, historic structures, archeological sites and displays of 225-million-year-old fossils.

National Parks: Fort Davis National Historic Site -- Fort Davis, Texas -- A key post in the defense system of west Texas, Fort Davis played a major role in the history of the Southwest. From 1854 until 1891, troops stationed at the post protected emigrants, freighters, mail coaches, and travelers on the San Antonio-El Paso Road. Today, Fort Davis, located in the heart of the Davis Mountains, is considered one of the best remaining examples of a post-Civil War frontier military post in the American Southwest because of the extent of the surviving structures and ruins. It is a vivid reminder of the significant role played by the military in the settlement and development of the western frontier.

National Parks: Big Thicket National Preserve -- Kountze, Texas -- Big Thicket National Preserve was established to protect the remnant of the region’s complex biological diversity. This complexity is the result of favorable climate, geology, and topography. Ice Age plant and animal migrations and more recent storm events, such as hurricanes have contributed to its uniqueness. The historic Big Thicket once covered over 4 million acres, and its magnificient 120-foot tall Longleaf Pine trees provided much of the wood products for a growing nation.

Situated on the boundary with Mexico along the Rio Grande, it is a place where countries and cultures meet. It is also a place that merges natural environments, from desert to mountains. It is a place where south meets north and east meets west, creating a great diversity of plants and animals. The park covers more than 801,000 acres of west Texas where the Rio Grande makes a sharp turn - the Big Bend.

National Parks: Bandelier National Monument -- Los Alamos, New Mexico -- "It is the grandest thing I ever saw," proclaimed Adolph F. Bandelier as he stood at the rim of Frijoles (free-HOH-lace) Canyon in 1880. The grand thing to which he referred was the remains of dwellings of the area’s earlier inhabitants, the Ancestral Pueblo people. Today, hundreds of thousands of people a year visit these dwellings; and, descendents of the Ancestral Pueblo people live in nearby pueblo communities along the Rio Grande.
